Cory Wells of Three Dog Night Has Died

Cory Wells, one of the lead singers in Three Dog Night's unique lineup, has died at his home in Dunkirk, New York at the age of 74.
"It is with deep sadness and disbelief that I must report the passing of Cory Wells, my beloved band mate for over 45 years," said Danny Hutton, one of the other lead singers in the group along with Chuck Negron.  "Cory was an incredible singer--a great performer, he could sing anything," Hutton added.

The cause of death was not released, but in a statement released by the band, it was noted that Wells had been performing with the group through September, when he "developed a problem with severe back pain."

Three Dog Night was one of the musical heavyweights of their era, racking up 19 hits in a little over five years.  They attracted immediate attention with their cover of the Nilsson song "One", which they not only took to #5 but achieved their first Gold record with it.  "Easy To Be Hard", from the rock musical Hair, "Eli's Coming", "Celebrate" and the #1 song written by Randy Newman--"Mama Told Me (Not To Come)" followed.

In 1971, Three Dog Night scored their biggest hit with "Joy To The World", The #43 Song of the Rock Era*.  They also scored with the Top 10 songs "Liar", "An Old Fashioned Love Song", "Never Been To Spain", "Black & White", "Shambala" and "The Show Must Go On".

"Cory was like a brother in so many ways," Hutton said.  "We had been together since 1965 and I am in shock at this sudden loss."
